Frequently Asked Question

What is a Leaking Underground Storage Tank?
Until the mid-1980s, most underground storage tanks were made of bare steel, which is likely to corrode over time and allow the contents to leak into the environment. The greatest potential hazard from a leaking underground storage tank (LUST) is that the petroleum or other hazardous substance can seep into the soil and contaminate groundwater, the source of drinking water for many citizens. A LUST can present other health and environmental risks, including the potential for fire and explosion.
Why is this information important?
Failure to obtain information on leaking underground storage tanks on the property, prior to its purchase, means that the buyer is willing to accept the property "as is". For the unwary buyer, this could include the cost of cleaning up contamination from hazardous substances and/or other health and environmental risks.
